Highlights of Metro International's history

1977
Metro International is founded with $16,595 grant from U.S. Information Agency administered by NAFSA, with volunteer staff offering orientation services and community visits to 12,000 international students in the NYC area.

1979
Metro publishes "Living in New York City" and "Help Yourself to Housing in NYC", guidebooks updated annually for international students.

1981
Mayor Ed Koch proclaims "International Student Day" and salutes Metro.

Metro secures contract with Council for International Exchange of Scholars to provide services for visiting Fulbright senior scholars.

1983
Metro forms Honorary Advisory Council of area college presidents.

1985
Metro begins sending international students into NYC public schools to offer "Global Classroom" presentations.

Metro partners with AT&T for "Discover New York," pairing New Yorkers with international students and Fulbright Scholars for neighborhood tours.

Metro's "Focus on Business" connects international students and scholars with NYC area corporations.

1987
Metro receives federal funding to provide enrichment programs and services to visiting Fulbright graduate students.

Monthly "Network" meetings for foreign student advisors are instituted.

1989
Metro begins annual sponsorship of international students and scholars to attend foreign affairs conferences at U.S. military academies.

Metro inaugurates annual Twilight Cruise around Manhattan for students, scholars and New Yorkers.

Metro offers student/scholar volunteer workshops on homelessness in NYC.

1991
First Annual Fulbright Awards Dinner is held at United Nations.

Japan/USA Dialogue program is funded by Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership.

1993
International Student Leadership Network is formed.

1995
Metro is awarded first Global Classroom contract with NYC Board of Education.

First issue of new MetroViews newsletter is produced.

1997
Metro tapped to convene special 50th anniversary symposium on the future of the Fulbright Program.

Metro publishes "Inside New York: International Student Edition"

Metro receives second contract from NYC Board of Education for staff development.

1999
Metro launches three-year strategic planning initiative to enhance Metro identity, fund development, marketing and technology.

Metro installs state-of-the-art computer network system and improves electronic outreach.

Metro celebrates first International Education Week with "Global Classroom Day in New York".

2001
In response to 9/11, Metro convenes Open Space Forum to bring international students and New Yorkers together to give voice to their feelings and concerns.

2002
With a half-million dollar annual budget, Metro celebrates 25 years of service and launches new strategic plan to enhance visibility, expand participation and grow to a million dollar operation.
